Obituary of James J. Lomax

North Creek: James J. Lomax, 62, of Fairview Avenue, passed away unexpectedly, Monday, October 17, 2016 at Albany Medical Center, following a brief illness. Born February 3, 1954 in Glens Falls, he was the son of Dorothy J. (Ash) Lomax of North Creek and the late James A. Lomax. Before his graduation from Johnsburg Central School in 1972, JJ had already obtained his pilot’s license at the age of 16. He later attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He married Candace Madison on May 14, 1979 in Spokane, WA. He eventually enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1977, proudly serving his country as a flight engineer on C-141 Starlifter aircraft, flying many sorties all over the globe. Following his honorable discharge in 1998, JJ began working for Gore Mountain Ski Center on their ski patrol and eventually became the supervisor of the Ski Bowl, the very place where he learned to ski as a child. Besides spending time with his family, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and skiing. He completed the 46 high peaks of the Adirondack Mountains twice over, but his real passion was flying. He earned his title as Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument, as well as his Airframe and Power plant certification. His students respected him for his quiet, reserved, gentle and kind instruction. He was a longtime member of the American Legion, Post 629, as well as the National Ski Patrol, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. In addition to his father, James was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Richard Armstrong. Survivors include his beloved wife of 38 years, Candace Lomax of North Creek; the source of his pride and joy, daughter Dr. Jamie Lomax and her husband, Michael Wetzler of Seattle WA; sister, Glenda Armstrong-Fuller and her husband, Ray of Queensbury. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, uncle and friends. Friends may call on JJ’s family from 6 to 8 pm, Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the Alexander Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 11 am, Friday, at the funeral home with Pastor Travis Armstrong, his nephew, officiating.
