Ruthie, I am so sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. I have many memories of sitting in your kitchen eating something yummy that Jerry cooked using a towel for a napkin. I still do that. Please accept my condolences.

Jerry’s Dad, Marc and my Dad were close friends. The Bruce’s were always in our lives growing up. His sister, Sandy used to babysit for my brother, John and I.
When I was 12 or 13, I invited about a dozen girls to a slumber party at my house in Athol. The day arrived and my Dad, at the last minute, wasn’t able to be there to chaperone. I was devastated! My dad called Jerry and asked him and Ruthie to chaperone the party, which they did. It was the absolute best party on a beautiful summer night and the coolest thing that happened was all of us girls piled into my dad’s ( Buick) convertible and Jerry and Ruth drove us around Thurman laughing and hanging out of the car! I’ll never forget that and all the little and big ways Jerry was there for me. He was an incredible man and he will be greatly missed.

My sincerest condolences to Ruthie and the family. Jerry and Ruthie were so kind, so generous, and the best party hosts. They were the best of friends to my Mom, Beverly Ross, after I had my accident, and I knew they were always there to lift her spirits. Jerry, you were the sweetest, and I've never met a more dedicated husband and father. You'll be missed, but never forgotten.

I am heartbroken upon hearing of Jerry's passing. We were friends for so many years. . . . .we attended church, we were neighbors, we shared wonderful meals (what a cook he was), and through it all we knew we could rely on each other through good times and bad. Though time and miles separated us, the memories have never faded.
To Ruthie and the children, Matthew, Bethany, Adam, Toby, Patience and all, my deepest sympathy and affection. There will never be another like him.

Jerry was a gift giver. He gave me thoughtful, practical presents that I'm still using twenty years later. But the greatest, incomparable gift that he gave us all was himself: his smile, his laughter, his generosity of spirit, and his boundless love of family and friends. With his passing, these gifts of his smile, his laughter, his generosity of spirit, and his boundless love of family and friends shall continue to enrich our lives.
Thank you, Jerry,
love,
Johnstone

I need to make a correction in the memory message I sent an hour ago. The Cub Scout Field Day that Edna Bruce drove us to in the new Buick convertible in 1954 was at Silver Bay, not Sabbath Day Point.

Jerry and I were classmates. We were in Cub Scouts together and Edna was our Den Mother when the Bruces lived over the Bruce Buick Dealership just south of the bridge where McDonald's is now. What a thrill when Edna drove us in a new yellow Buick convertible over Tongue Mountain to the Cub Scout Field Day at Sabbath Day Point in June 1954, the year before the road to Diamond Point was paved.
When we took the SATs (Scholastic Aptitude Tests) in our senior year, we were totally surprised when Jerry got an incredible score on the math (ie, the quantitative) part of the test. As I recall, it was at the 98th percentile!! We didn't know we had a latent Einstein in our midst.
I remember playing ping pong with Jerry in the basement of what's now the Cornerstone Victorian house when the Bruces owned it for awhile.
Jerry and I were teammates in high school sports. Jerry was a very fast runner. When we did our wind
sprints the length of the field at the end of football practices, only Dick France would end up ahead of Jerry - by about five yards - but Jerry would be five yards ahead of everybody else. Bob Fisher was next, then yours truly and the rest.
I remember the parties at Ruth Mundy's house when Jerry lived next on the corner. Memorable times.
I regret I don't have any stories about Jerry when the Bruces were at the Colonial Arms.
I almost bought a new Kia from Garvey Kia about 15 years ago, but Barbara spotted a low-mileage used 2005 Buick LeSabre in the Chronicle ad for the other Garvey dealership for less than half the price. It had the more comfortable split-bench seats, column shift, and other features I preferred, so I bought it instead. Over the years, I bought three more 2005 LeSabres from Jerry when I spotted them on the lot he and Bob Maltbie had uptown. Don't expect to find any more of them. When doing the paper work in his office, Jerry and I would have long conversations about old times. Will miss him.
My condolences to Ruth, Bobby, and all the children and grandchildren.
