Obituary of Philip R. Gratton

Lake George / Weehawken, NJ: Philip Richard Gratton, 88, of Heritage Commons Residential Healthcare in Ticonderoga passed away Friday, September 6, 2013. Philip was born April 29, 1925 in Montpelier, Vermont, the son of Joseph and Irene (Sanborn) Gratton. Philip was a veteran of World War II. After discharge from the military, he owned homes in Lake George, N.Y., Weehawken, N.J., and Connecticut. He was employed as office manager with Litton Corporation in New York City. Philip loved dogs and spent many years as a well-known and respected breeder and trainer of several award-winning show dogs. He traveled the Northeast and beyond to enter dogs in many competitions. Philip had a heart of gold, and throughout his life he always took the time to help friends who were in need. In later years, he moved from his home in Weehawken to Ticonderoga, N.Y. to be closer to his family. His niece Brenda (Moon) Marioles was the trusted family member who provided guidance, comfort and security to help him transition to this final chapter of his life. The eldest of six, Philip was predeceased by siblings Ruth Gratton, Virginia Moon, Vivian Bent and Donald Gratton. Survivors include one sister, Dorothy (Gratton) Amspacker of Lakewood, WA; niece Brenda (Moon) Marioles of Chestertown, N.Y.; and several other nieces and nephews in Lake George and Vermont. There are no calling hours scheduled. A graveside service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 1 pm, Wednesday, September 11, 2013 in the family plot at North Caldwell Cemetery, Truesdale Hill Road, Lake George.
