Please share a memory of Hedwig to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bolton Landing Hedwig “Hedy” Neuffer, 82, of South Farm Road, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Glens Falls Hospital following a courageous yearlong battle with mucosal melanoma. Born February 3, 1935 in Stuttgart, Germany, she was the daughter of Adolph and Maria (Baur) Bauerle. She married Wolfgang Neuffer on August 24, 1957. He moved to the United States in November 1959. She and their son, Erich, moved to the United States in May 1960. Hedy spoke no English when she arrived but worked hard to master the language. She was an amazing woman who positively influenced so many people. Hedy and Wolfgang had a beautiful, happy, successful life together. They had a drive, ambition and a partnership rarely seen today. Together they purchased Candlelight Cottages in Bolton Landing in 1975 and operated the business for the next 24 years. Hedy, Wolfgang, and their son, Erich, together operated Neuffer’s Deli starting in 1982 until Erich purchased the business in 1986. Their daughter, Heidi, purchased Candlelight Cottages when they retired in 1999. For the past 10 years, until the summer of 2016, Hedy enjoyed working for her son in the store on Glen Island, in “the Narrows” of Lake George. She was known as the “older German lady” and she enjoyed seeing the many families return to the store year after year. Hedy enjoyed gardening and had many beautiful flowers around their house. Hedy and Wolfgang were charter members of the German-American Society of the Adirondacks. Besides her beloved husband of 60 years, she is survived by her son, Erich Neuffer and his companion Mary Bracken of Bolton Landing and his children Erich and Karl of Bolton Landing, daughter, Heidi Hess and her husband, Mark of Bolton Landing and their daughter, Sonja Jackson and her husband Michael of Lorton, Va. and their son, Mackenzie of Bolton Landing; as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins in Germany and the United States. Her family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and support staff at the C.R. Wood Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital including Dr. Taylor and staff in Radiology; Dr. Mason in medical oncology who worked hard with Dr. Haq at Dana Farber in Boston to care for Hedy with the finest treatments available. The doctors and staff were not only knowledgeable, but also compassionate and caring. They would also like to thank Mary Bracken of Saratoga Hospital who worked tirelessly with the many doctors and nurses involved to ensure Hedy was receiving the finest care available. Friends may call on Hedy’s family from 4 to 6 pm Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at the Alexander Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. A Life Tribute will conclude the visitation at 6 pm, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the C.R. Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital or to the melanoma department at Dana Farber in Boston. Please visit www.alexanderfh.net for online guest book, condolences, and directions.
