Obituary of James Leo Monroe

North Creek: James “Leo” Monroe, 82, of West Holcomb Street, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born July 24, 1928 in North Creek, he was the son of the late Elwin, Sr. and Gladys (Smith) Monroe. Following his graduation from North Creek High School in 1946, James enlisted in the United States Army, fighting for his country during the Korean War. Upon returning from Korea, Leo was employed by N.L. Industries in Tahawus as a lead operator and later, foreman, for over 40 years until his retirement. Leo had a passion for music. He played for the Moonlighters at various local dance halls. He loved to ski, and did so until his body would no longer allow him to do so at 80 years old. He also enjoyed hunting with his family and friends. He married Pierrette Demers on August 6, 1955 and the couple spent 55 wonderful years together. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his four year old son, Chuckie Monroe; his brother, Elwin Monroe, Jr.; his sister, Lottie Ellifritz; and his nephew, Joe Monroe. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Pierrette Monroe of North Creek; his daughter, Cheri Hayes and her husband, Steve of North Creek; his grandchildren, Drew and Bethany Hayes of North Creek; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Monroe of North Creek; his brother-in-law, Clenon Ellifritz of Riparius; his brother, Harry Monroe and his wife, Nancy of North Creek; brother and sister in laws, Marcel and Cecile Demers of Florida; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call on Leo’s family from 4 to 7 pm, Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. Members of the North Creek American Legion Post 629 will conduct a brief service for their fallen comrade to close the visitation at 6:45 pm. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 11 am, Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. Raymond Lloyd of the North Creek Baptist Church, officiating.
