Obituary of Edmund F. Tomac
Please share a memory of Edmund to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lake George:
Edmund F. Tomac, Jr., 92, formerly of Queensbury and Schenectady, passed away Monday, April 28, 2014 at his home on Lake George, following a lengthy illness.
Born July 2, 1921 in Schenectady, he was the son of the late Edmund F. Sr. and Cecilia (Kruszona) Tomac.
Edmund was a proud graduate of the General Electric Machinist Apprentice course in 1943, before serving his country in the Unites States Navy during WWII.
He met Irene J. Kulesza at a Polish Dance at Shady Lane Tavern; three years later they married on Irene’s 18th birthday, April 28, 1945, in Maspeth; exactly 69 years to the day of his passing, and both of their parents’ wedding anniversaries.
Upon his honorable discharge for the military, he returned to Schenectady and with his wife, opened Carnight’s Ice Cream Parlor on Albany Street, in the late 1940’s.
After building his own home, he decided on a different career path, and began building his new business, Tomac Builders; this allowed him to merge his skills in creative design and construction with his entrepreneurial spirit. His attention to detail and dedication to providing quality work quickly expanded operations, and resulted in his largest project, the Wolfert’s Roost Estates in Menands; this development of custom designed, hand built, executive homes adapted his own creative home designs to the natural attributes of the land, far ahead of its time, raising the bar for affordable luxury homes in the Capital District.
Edmund spent most of his adult life enjoying the Lake George region, beginning with his first camp in the Cotton Point Association. After retiring in 1976, he moved his family to the shores of Lake George and began spending more of his time indulging in his passion for fishing. His restless nature forced him out of retirement, where he continued to build a series of townhouses in Lake George Village, along with many additional projects.
Besides his parents, Edmund is predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Irene.
He is survived by a son, Edmund F. Tomac, III and his wife, Laurel, of Lascassas, TN; two daughters, Christine (Tomac) Paeglow and her husband, Gray, of Lake George, and Michelle (Tomac) Cayo and her husband, Michael, of Ballston Lake; three grandchildren, Christopher Paeglow, and William and Nicole Tomac. He also leaves behind a sister, Eleanor (Tomac) Monroe, a nephew, Timothy Monroe, and his family, as well as several cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
Friends may call on Edmund’s family from 9 to 11 am, Monday, May 5, 2014, at Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg.
A funeral service will take place, following the visitation at 11 am, Monday at the funeral home with Fr. Paul Cox officiating.
Rite of Committal will follow in Most Holy Redeemer cemetery, Schenectady, where he will be laid to rest alongside his wife.
A post funeral reception will follow the interment.
Edmund’s family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Filion and his nurse, Melanie, for the care and compassion they showed to both he, and his family throughout this difficult time.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Edmund’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
