Warrensburg: Donald Edward Baker, 74, of Schroon River Rd., passed away peacefully, Friday, September 30, 2016, at Glens Falls Hospital, surrounded by his loving family and friends, following a courageous battle with Leukemkia. Born October 8, 1941 in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Theron and Ida (Levensaler) Baker. Don was a proud veteran of both the United States Navy and Army. He was a combat veteran, who served a tour in Vietnam as a parachute rigger while in the Army. Throughout his entire professional career, whether in the woods or in construction, Don loved working with heavy equipment. For many years, he was a bulldozer operator for Galusha & Sons, working for them as recently as this past summer; Don ran a bulldozer with such a high degree of skill and precision, and was a valued member of their company and family. In addition to his parents, Donnie, was predeceased by his sister, Joanne deLima, two brothers, Timothy and Richard Baker, and brother-in-law, Herb deLima. He is survived by his son and proudest achievement in life, Jared Baker and his wife, Martina; three grandchildren, who he adored, Mackenzie, Tessa, and baby Ty, all of Horseheads; a sister, Edrie (Bob) Griffin; two brothers, Bob and Tom Baker. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. Don was a cherished friend, confidante, metor, and teacher to many throughout the years, in particular to, Edrie Ann Squires, Jack Sweet and his family, Kate and Pat Galusha, and Tina and Dan Galusha, as well as to many others; he will be greatly missed. At Don’s request there will be no calling hours scheduled. A celebration of his life will take place at noon, Sunday, October 9, 2016, the day after what would have been his 75th birthday, at George Henry’s, 3735 Main St., Warrensburg. Friends are encouraged to come, share stories, and raise a glass in Don’s honor at one of his very favorite places. Burial with military honors will take place in Warrensburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Don’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or at www.stjude.org. Donnie’s family would like to thank the staff at Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, as well as the staff on Tower 6 at Glens Falls Hospital for the compassion and care provided throughout his illness and in his final moments.
