Wevertown: Muriel R. LaPointe, 91, of Waddell Road, passed away peacefully, Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Glens Falls Hospital five days before her 92nd birthday, with her children by her side. Born May 19, 1924 on French Hill in Thurman, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Grace (Russell) Rounds. Muriel attended the one room school house in Thurman at Kenyontown, and the Warrensburg Senior High School. Muriel was a member of the Sodom Community Church in Johnsburg for many years. She loved the Lord and embraced the fellowship and learning shared at the church. Throughout her years she had various jobs including working at a Powder Plant in Charlestown, Indiana, during World War II, while living in Kentucky. As a teenager she worked at dude ranches in Stony Creek and Thurman. She worked at both the Warrensburg Shirt and Dress factories from the 1940’s through the mid 1960’s. During the 1960’s she worked at Camp Chenawah in Minerva. After that time, Muriel worked as waitress, cook and store clerk at various places including the Lake George Bowl, Harry’s Cordial Inn, Cronin’s Vacationland (for many years) and Gore Mountain Ski Center food concession (winters) and The Price is Right shop (summers). Muriel retired at age 84 after working for 27 years alongside her best friend, Rosalie Russell at Gore Mountain where she was affectionately known as “Gram”. Muriel loved her family with all her heart and loved going on day trips and vacations with her children. She has traveled to Tennessee, Florida, Alaska, Nevada, the Caribbean, and throughout the eastern states. She loved country music and knew more history than most about it. She enjoyed crocheting, watching RFDTV and game shows when at home. She was always doing something for her family and never missed a birthday. Most recently she enjoyed going to Blue Grass and Country music jams and listening to the music. She was a member for many years of the Haskell Brothers VFW Auxiliary in Warrensburg, the American Legion Auxiliary in North Creek, Thurman Historical Society, and recently joined the Adirondack Tri County Nursing & Rehab Center auxiliary and the Northeast Association of Country Western Entertainers. Muriel donated generously to many causes, one of her favorites being the Father Beiting Appalachian Mission Center in Louisa, KY; another was the SPCA. She loved animals and helping where she could. In 2001 she traveled to Kentucky to visit the Christian Appalachian Project which she had donated to for many years. In addition to her parents, Muriel was predeceased by her husband, Leo LaPointe, brothers, Clement “Bo” and Glen Rounds, sisters, Hilda Rounds, Doris Morrissey, and Leah Sumner, a granddaughter, Lisa Marie Hitchcock, and two sons-in-law, Matt Wood and Gig Slater. She is survived by four children, Terry (Donna) Hitchcock of Sandwich, MA, Deana Wood, Joelene Slater, and Randy (Christine) Hitchcock, all of Wevertown; grandchildren: Michelle Hitchcock, Sheree (Paul) Lancaster, Shawn Hitchcock; Blain Hitchcock, Jordan (Wayne Brewster) Dingman , and Tyanne Hitchcock; Travis (Teresa) Slater, Christopher (Shannon) Slater, Wendy (Daniel) Davis, Jodi (Joe) Connally; great-grandchildren: Jordan and Ryan Cooper, Cassandra (Chris) Karras, Curran Baker, Jade Lancaster, Evan and Regan Slater, Emmylou Brewster, and Joshua and Noah Davis; one great-great-grandson Parker Karras; and a sister-in-law, Betty Broadwell of Oswego. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, who she loved as her own, as well as many cousins, special friends, and her cat, “Mister”. Friends may call on Muriel’s family from noon to 3 pm, Thursday, May 19, 2016 at Alexander Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg.
