Obituary of Walter R. Byrne
Warrensburg: Walter R. Byrne, 83, of Warrensburg, NY passed away on December 24, 2023.
Walter was born and raised in Queens, NY. He served in the US Army from 1959-1963. He married the love of his life, Millie on January 7, 1961, After the birth of their first child, Walter moved his family to Mahwah, NJ. Their family grew, and they lived in Mahwah until 1981 when he finally had his dream to move to the Adirondacks come true. Walter had a strong work ethic. He started his postal career delivering mail in Manhattan and worked hard to climb the ladder and end his career as the Postmaster of North Creek, NY. He was knowledgeable about everything in nature-fishing, hunting, trees, birds, and animals. Walter enjoyed baseball with his favorite team being the Mets. He was also a master carpenter- building everything from dollhouses to a summer home. He was self-taught before Youtube! Walter was known as a jokester making many people laugh with his antics.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Millie, his sister, Joan Considine, and his special nephew, Michael.
Walter is survived by his five children, Donna Hatch (Bill), Walter Byrne (Kim), Debbie Kasson (Cliff), Diana Kelly (Todd), and Christopher Byrne (Lorrie); his 16 grandchildren, Aaron & Ryan Edwards; Keara Barringers, Kindra Scofield, Kyle Flaherty, Pierce Byrne; Alicia, Sarah, & Julia Kasson; John Karl, Danny, & Timmy Kelly; Nick Johnson, Madeline & Melinda Byrne, Casey Cleavland; one great-grandchild, Oliver Johnson; and his dog, Ruby. He is also survived by his sister-in-laws, cousins, and many nieces and nephews. Walter was a father figure and Pop Pop to many of his children's friends in Warrensburg.
The family would like to thank Lorrie Mason, Norma Galusha, and Alyssa Delmonico who have a special gift for taking care of others including Walter. Thanks to all our friends who helped navigate his care these last few months. The food, visits, prayers, and emotional support were appreciated more than you know. The family takes comfort knowing that he was reunited with the love of his life on Christmas.
Friends may call on Walter’s family from 4pm – 7pm, Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Alexander Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11am, Friday, December 29, 2023 at St. Isaac Jogues, 86 Riverside Dr., Chestertown, NY.
