Obituary of Mickey George Mayes

WARRENSBURG Mickey Mayes, 83, of Gold Street passed away Thursday, June 14, 2007, at Glens Falls hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born on October 8, 1923, in Glenville, the son of Ira H. and Anna (Peer) Mayes. Mickey was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, enlisting in 1943 to fight in five major Pacific Campaigns as a member of the Fourth Marine Division (the “Fighting Fourth”) during World War II including Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. While Mickey landed on Iwo Jima with the 4th Marine Division, his brother Ira was on the Navy ship Nicholas shelling the island. The brothers were over 9,000 away from home with only 4 miles between them. Mickey worked for many years as a heavy equipment and crane operator as a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers out of Albany. Mickey was predeceased by his parents, Ira and Anna Mayes; his brothers, Victor Mayes and Ira J. Mayes; his sisters, Anna Porter, Olive Dawson, and Edna Dawson. He is survived by his devoted wife, Winnie (Kiniry) Mayes, with whom he celebrated 65 years of marriage on June 6, 2007, his six daughter and sons-in-law Sharon and Adam Good of South Glens Falls, Colleen and Jerry Combs, Sheila and Ed Carpenter, Mickeylee and Rusty Monroe, Sharie and Jay Walerstein, and Garnet and John Neve all of Warrensburg; thirteen grandchildren Sunday (Combs) Conine, J Combs, Kristi Carpenter, Bridgette Carpenter, Amanda (Carpenter) Huppe, Ed Carpenter, Michelle (Monroe) Morton, Heidi (Monroe) Everts, Darcy Monroe, Jessica, Marissa and Erika Walerstein, and Vallen Mayes; seven great grandchildren Paisley Conine, Carter Carpenter, Jacob, Noah and Luke Morton, Tiffany Everts, and Christopher Roselle. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, June 18, 2007, at Alexander- Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main Street, Warrensburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Warrensburg with Father Paul Cox celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Cecilia’s Cemetery, Warrensburg.
