Obituary of T.Sgt Barbara Smith

Minerva: Technical Sergeant Barbara Smith, 33, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2007 at her home in Knob Noster, MO surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Sergeant Smith was an Engineering Journeyman assigned to the Engineering Flight, 509th Civil Engineer Squadron, Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri. Sergeant Smith was born September 14, 1973 in Simi Valley, California. She graduated from Elk Grove, CA High School in 1991. She then enlisted in the United States Air Force from Oakland, California. After completing basic training, she became a Computer Aided Design Operator at the 38th Mission Support Squadron, Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma. She then served as an Engineering Assistant for the 35th Civil Engineer Squadron, Misawa Air Base, Japan, and again at the 52d Civil Engineer Squadron, Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany. At Spangdahlem Air Base, she also became the Quality Assurance Evaluator. She returned to the United States to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where she served as Instructor for the 366th Training Squadron, Detachment 7. Sergeant Smith came to the 509th Civil Engineer Squadron, Whiteman Air Force Base in May 2004. She was a graduate of Airman Leadership School and had completed her Associate’s Degree in Construction Trends and Technology from the Community College of the Air Force. Besides her outstanding military career, Barbara enjoyed gardening, bird watching, painting, crocheting, horseback riding and motorcycling. She married Scott D. Smith formerly of New Windsor, NY on November 10, 2003. She is predeceased by her mother in law, Florence Smith. She is survived by her husband, Technical Sergeant Scott D. Smith; her father and mother Quinton O. and Sharon L. Mitchell of Wilton, CA; her brother, Paul Mitchell of South Dakota; her sister Tina M. Crawley, and her husband Greg of Salem OR; her sister, Candace A. Scillieri, and her husband Ken of El Paso, TX; her sister Michelle L. Jaczola, and her husband Mike Elk Grove, CA; and her niece Christi and nephews Nic, Todd and Vinny; her father in law, Vernon Smith Sr. and his wife, Deloris of Minerva, NY; brother in law, Vernon Smith Jr. and his companion, Ashley Conlon and their daughter, Autumn. Friends may call on Sergeant Smith’s family from 5-8 pm Thursday at the Alexander Funeral Home, Inc, 4479 State Rt. 28, North River. Graveside funeral services with full military honors will be conducted 10 am Friday at the Minerva Baptist Cemetery, State Rt. 28N, Minerva, NY.
