Obituary of Virginia Baker

North Creek C. Virginia Baker, 97, of State Route 28, passed away peacefully at her home early Monday morning following a long illness. Born on August 22, 1910 in Pittsfield, MA, she was the daughter of the late Barbara (Dowd) and Charles H. Scott. Virginia married John J. Baker in 1927, when they moved to the North Creek area. The couple operated lodging cabins in North River for several years. She and John soon established Baker Lumber Co. which they operated until 1971. John passed away on October 3, 1987. Mrs. Baker was also a homemaker raising seven children and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was an avid equestrian, riding her horse Babe around North River. She had a passion for sewing, knitting, crocheting and cooking. Virginia also enjoyed summers at her cottage on Schroon Lake. Besides her husband, John, Virginia was predeceased by her infant son Jerry, a daughter, Louise Hennessy, two grandsons, Bernie Baker and John Hennessy,Jr., several brothers and a sister. Mrs. Baker is survived by her children, Jack (Carol) Baker of Bishopville, SC, Bill (Maddy) Baker of Redding, CA, Fred (Maureen) Baker of Fountain Inn, SC, Ronnie (Nancy) Baker of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Tim Baker of Jacksonville, FL and Carol Baker of Waddell, AZ, fifteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and her beloved cat, Sammy. Friends may call on Virginia's family on Friday, February 1, 2008 from 5 until 7pm at Alexander Funeral Home, Inc, 4479 State Route 28, North River, where a Rosary service will follow at 7pm A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Saturday, February 2, at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Olmstedville. Burial will follow at Irishtown Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to Johnsburg EMS, High Peaks Hospice or to a Humane Society of ones choice Virginia's family wishes to thank the Nurses and Staff of High Peaks Hospice and Hudson Headwaters Health Network. A special thank you to Dr. James Hicks, Margaret, Marge, Loretta, Alice, Elaine, Renada, Patty and Tressa for their compassion & kindness during this difficult time.
