Obituary of Alice B. Burrell

Carthage: Alice B. (Schreck) Burrell, 92, passed away Monday evening, January 30, 2017, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, with her family by her side, following a brief illness. Born January 20, 1925 in Deferiet, she was the daughter of the late Joseph E. and Anna (Kogut) Schreck. Alice attended Herrings Grade School and graduated from the Augustinian Academy in Carthage. She married Herbert T. Burrell on January 9, 1943, at St. James Church, where she was a dedicated and faithful communicant for many years. Her beloved “Herbie” passed away on June 4, 2000 after 57 years of marriage. Alice was employed as the cafeteria manager for the Augustinian Academy, and for many years as a spiral tape machine operator at St. Regis Paper Company; she retired after serving many years as a payroll clerk at Carthage Area Hospital. Alice loved spending time with her family, and while she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, dominoes, in her earlier years, she eventually developed a passion for TV game shows and FOX News. Besides her parents and late husband, Alice is predeceased by a daughter, Carol Ann, who died November 24, 1962, of a rare blood disease, three sisters, Theresa Wojtowicz, Helen Archer, and Dorothy Smith, and two brothers, Joseph F. Schreck and John E. Schreck. She is survived by three daughters, Kathryn B. Smith and her companion, William Reynolds, and Lori A. Nettles and her husband, Timothy, all of Carthage, and Lisa M. Alexander and her husband, John, of Warrensburg; five grandsons, James Smith and his wife, Rosalind, of Broomfield, CO, Gregory Smith and his wife, Julie, of Longmont, CO, Jeffrey Smith and his wife, Susan, of Sparta, NJ, Jonathan Alexander, of Davenport, IA, and David Alexander, and his wife, Kate, of Warrensburg; three granddaughters, Alice Ann Casey and her husband, Matthew, of West Point, Michelle Nettles, of Carthage, and Ashley Alexander and her fiancé, Aries Bolton, of Warrensburg; three great-grandsons, Jeran Smith, and Benjamin and Maximus Bolton; two great-granddaughters, Sidney Smith and Piper Alexander; and a sister, Carlyle “Mary” Holliday, of Carthage. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. Alice touched many people, will be sorely missed, and remembered as a loving, caring, woman who of God. Friends may call at the family home, 219 S. Clinton Street, Carthage, Friday, February 3, 2017 at their convenience. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Saturday, at St. James Catholic Church, Carthage, with Rev. Thomas Higman, presiding. Rite of Committal will take place in St. James Cemetery.
