Bernard A. Howe, Sr., 85, formerly of West Seneca, passed away peacefully, Monday, July 14, 2014 at the Glens Falls Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Born July 20, 1928 in Luzerne, he was the son of the late Daniel and Jesse (Bennett) Howe.
Bernie proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, two Bronze Star’s as well as the United Nations Service Medal.
Following his honorable discharge in 1952, he began his employment as a welder with Niagara Transformer in Cheektowaga until his retirement in 1993.
Bernie was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was also a long time amateur radio operator.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Virginia Howe; two grandchildren: Daniel Howe and Kevin Large; and his three brothers, Leonard, Clyde and Leslie Howe.
He is survived by his beloved children: Bernie Howe, Jr. and his wife, Chris of Casselberry, FL; Shirley Garrand and her husband, Mike of Newcomb; his longtime companion, Pat Nowak of West Seneca as well as her children, Sharon and Diane Nowak; his grandchildren: Hope Owens-Flynn, Carmen Owens, and Amanda Howe Frasier-Byrd; great-grandchildren: Daniel, Ashley and Amber Flynn, Trinity Owens, Coty Wharton, Branden, Bryanna and Trinity Howe, Sarah, Stephanie, Shawn and Shane Large as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
At Bernie’s request, there are no calling hours or funeral services scheduled.
His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses of the Glens Falls Hospital for the wonderful care given to Bernie during his illness.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Bernie’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
