Mary C. Sweet, 70, of State Route 28 passed away peacefully, Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Glens Falls Hospital, surrounded by her loving family following a graceful battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born January 21, 1943 in Warrensburg, she was one of eight children of the late Edgar R.and Bertha (Potter) Carpenter.
Mary was a lifelong resident of the area. She was a graduate of Warrensburg Central School, class of 1961.
Mary was employed at Potter’s Diner, where she met the love of her life, John R. “Jack” Sweet, the couple wed on September 25, 1964 at the Church of the Holy Cross. She also worked as a cosmetologist at M. Solomon Salon in Glens Falls, before leaving to raise her children.
She operated her business, Mary Sweet Upholstery out of her home for 40 years, her talent will be greatly missed.
Mary was a communicant of the Church of the Holy Cross in Warrensburg and active in the church community. She volunteered annually making her “famous” apple pies for Operation Santa Claus.
Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by a brother, Robert L. Carpenter, and her in-laws, Robert J. and Claire F. Sweet.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Jack Sweet of Warrensburg; the couple’s five children: Sharine Sweet Layden of Saratoga Springs, Stephanie LaFond and her husband, Paul of Saratoga Springs, Robert E. Sweet of Warrensburg, Jacqueline Sweet-McNeill and her husband, Dan of Warrensburg, and John V. Sweet and his wife, Ashley of Warrensburg; 16 grandchildren, John and Cassie Layden, Alexandra, Paul J., and Benjamin LaFond, Ryan, Olivia, and Nolan McNeill, Alysia, Kayla, Trevor, and Hailey Sweet, Gwendaline, Maggie, John V. II, and Meagan, Sweet; an “adopted son”, Dr. Shawn V. LaBelle and his wife, Karen of Simpsonville, as well as their children, Noah, Summer, and Asa; a sister, Ellen Connor and her husband, Thomas of Warrensburg; five brothers, Phillip Carpenter and his wife, Rosie of Thurman, Donald Carpenter and his longtime companion, Donna Keck of Thurman, Edgar Carpenter and his wife, Sheila of Warrensburg, William Carpenter and his wife, Leslie of Stony Creek, and Richard Carpenter and his wife, Lisa of Warrensburg; two sisters-in-law, Laddie Toney and her husband, Jack of Warrensburg, and Glenna Aldrich and her husband, Beaver of Stony Creek. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may call on Mary’s family from 5 to 8 pm, Friday, July 19, 2013 at Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg.
A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Saturday at the Church of the Holy Cross, 3764 Main St., Warrensburg with the Rev. Thomas Pettigrew officiating.
Burial will follow in Warrensburg Cemetery.
Pall bearers will be Mary’s sons-in-law, Paul LaFond and Daniel McNeill, and her grandsons, Paul J. and Benjamin LaFond, John Layden, Trevor Sweet, and Ryan and Nolan McNeill.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Mary’s name to the Church of the Holy Cross, 3764 Main St., Warrensburg, NY 12885, the C.R. Wood Oncology Floor at Glens Falls Hospital, 100 Park Street, Glens Falls, NY 12810 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Words cannot describe the profound gratitude of Mary’s family to all who helped along her graceful journey. We especially want to thank Dr. Erik Pillemer, Donna Boss, Sue (TT), Lily, Tom, Randy, Georgia, the entire staff of the Oncology Unit at Glens Falls Hospital, Mary Murphy and the Warren County Public Health Nurses.
