Lake George:
Robert J. Murray, 75, of Mohican Street, passed away peacefully, Thursday, July 14, 2016 at Albany Medical Center with his loving family by his side.
Born May 19, 1941 in Queens, he was the son of the late Harold and Veronica (Gorman) Murray.
Following his graduation from Riverhead High School, Bob started his working career working for Grumman Aircraft Co. as a mechanic for nearly a decade. He was involved in the construction of the lunar module contracted by NASA for the Apollo space program. He was an active member of the Riverhead Volunteer Fire Company for several years.
He eventually relocated upstate to Warrensburg, working various construction jobs until he began his employment at International Paper for 17 years until his retirement in 2000.
Bob was an avid sports fan, enjoying his Sunday football with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed golfing, NASCAR, and baseball. In his younger years, he excelled during tryouts for the Atlanta Braves as a pitcher until he sustained a knee injury and could no longer play. He shared his love for the game with many children as a coach for Warrensburg Little League. His greatest joy was babysitting his grandchildren to whom he was affectionately known as “Big Poppa.”
He is survived by his children, Dawn Powers and her husband, Patrick of Warrensburg and Robert Murray and his wife, Darcy of DE; grandchildren, Sean, Tyler, and Kaylie Powers, all of Warrensburg and Jennifer and Jared Murray of DE; his siblings: William Murray and his wife, Dottie of Riverhead; Vincent Murray and his wife, Jackie of Hempstead; Thomas Murray and his wife, Kathy of Jordan; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
At Bob’s request, there are no calling hours scheduled.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be conducted privately at the convenience of his family.
His earthly remains will be interred in Warrensburg Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
