Obituary of Samuel A. Baker

Please share a memory of Samuel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Brant Lake: Samuel Anthony Baker, 74, of Davis Rd., passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus, Saturday, August 8, 2015 at his home, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born December 18, 1940 in Brant Lake, he was the son of the late Walter and Frances (Mocerine) Baker. A lifelong resident of Brant Lake, Sam attended Brant Lake Central School before obtaining his diploma through correspondence school. Sam and Nancy Selma Smith eloped on April 20, 1967 in Clifton Park, following a 12 day courtship. He enlisted into the United States Army in 1963, where he was stationed in Germany before his honorable discharge in 1965. Sam was a handyman, who could fix anything; he spent many years as a mechanic at various area shops and was also involved in property maintenance and caretaking. Later in life, he was a substitute custodian at North Warren Central School. Besides spending time with his family, Sam was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hiking. He also enjoyed attending Warrensburg Assemblies of God and later on, Gospel Lighthouse Assemblies of God. The “Old Trader” was famous for his bartering and tinkering. He will be missed by his friends at Stewarts, beginning every morning with a strong cup of coffee. Sam will be remembered as a caring and giving man, who was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Sam served as past Town Councilman in the town of Horicon. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Nancy Baker of Brant Lake; three children, Philip Baker and his wife, Karin, of Old Bridge, NJ, Rebecca Bramer and her husband, Russell, of Queensbury, and Rachel Baker of Brant Lake; three grandchildren, Sarah and Daniel Baker, and Seth Bramer; his “second son”, Richard Millward and his wife, Minerva, and their daughters, Abigail and Elizabeth of Keyport, NJ. He is survived by his siblings, nieces and nephews, extended family and many special friends. Friends may call on Sam’s family from 4-6 pm, Monday, August 10, 2015 at Alexander Funeral Home, Inc., 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 6 pm, at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Mead, of the Gospel Lighthouse Church, officiating. Burial will take place privately at the convenience of the family in Brant Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Sam’s memory to High Peaks Hospice, 79 Glenwood Ave., Queensbury, NY 12804 or the CR Wood Cancer Center, 102 Park St., Glens Falls, NY 12801.
