Obituary of Carol Waltrude Durkin

North Creek: Carol “Waltrude” Durkin, 89, of Ridge St., passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at her home. Born March 27, 1927 in Johnsburg, she was the daughter of the late Mert and Queena (Cooper) Hitchcock. Waltrude was a member of the last graduating class of North Creek High School. She and her mother, lived at Barton Mines, where they hand made jewelry and ran a gift shop where it was sold. Waltrude was employed by Cunningham’s Ski Barn and at Gore Mountain as a bookkeeper. She married Roy Durkin on December 6, 1951 at St. James Church in North Creek; the couple enjoyed traveling throughout the country and Nova Scotia in their camper. Waltrude was a talented painter and exceptional skier, who loved crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and playing Pinochle. In addition to her parents and husband, Roy, Waltrude was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Hitchcock. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Margaret Prashaw of North Creek, and an aunt, Betty Hitchcock. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Muffin, as well as a large extended family and many special friends. Friends may call on Waltrude’s family from 10 to 11 am, Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Olmstedville. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow the visitation at the church, at 11 am, Tuesday. Rite of Committal will follow in St. James Cemetery, North Creek.
