Obituary of Furman R. Pryme

Warrensburg: Furman R. Pryme, 77, formerly of Warrensburg passed away, Friday, August 14, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, surrounded by family, following a long battle with emphysema and lung cancer. Furman graduated from Bellows Free Academy, St. Albans, VT. and received a Bachelor in education from Johnson State Teachers College, Johnson, VT. in 1954. He also received a Masters in Education from SUNY Plattsburgh. Furman married Diane Duba August 15, 1953. He began his teaching and coaching career at Essex and Alburg VT. where he took the boy’s varsity basketball team to the Vermont State Finals. Furman and his family moved to Warrensburg in 1961 where he remained teaching European history and various social science courses until he retired in 1988. Always the consummate Vermonter, Furm was also a water fowl hunting guide, meat cutter and home builder. A prolific reader, Furman also enjoyed crossword puzzles. Even when he was quite ill, he enjoyed completing the Sunday New York Times crosswords. An avid sportsman and athlete, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and baseball. He remained a staunch Red Socks fan, but since becoming a New Yorker, also routed for the NY Mets. He received the freedoms Foundation Valley Forge Teachers Medal in 1967 and was inducted into the Johnson State College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984. Besides his parents, he is also predeceased by his second wife, Beverly Karpell Pryme. Furman is survived by his sons: Bill and his wife Debbie of Johnson, VT. and Brian of Warrensburg; daughter Laurie Hafner and her husband Ralph of Wappingers Falls; grandchildren: Mason Pryme of Cape Cod MA, Brea Pryme of Johnson, VT, Dillon and Harley Pryme of Warrensburg and Gretchen and Paul Hafner of Wappingers Falls; and brother Richard Pryme and his wife Doris of St. Albans, VT. Friends and former students may call on Furm’s family from 4 – 7 on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main Street, Warrensburg. A memorial service will follow visitation at 7 pm at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Countryside Adult Home and Wingate at Dutchess for the compassionate care provided to their father and grandfather.
