Newcomb:
Mary Menshausen Stubing, 83, of Newcomb, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs with her loving family at her side.
Born April 4, 1930 in Warrensburg, NY, she was the daughter of Nathalie (Lewis) Menshausen of Warrensburg and the late Marvin R. Menshausen.
Mary graduated from Warrensburg Central School in 1948. She then went on to Plattsburgh State Teachers College where in 1952, she graduated with a B.S. degree in Home Economics Education. Afterward, she moved to Newcomb, NY where she taught home economics for three years; married, and then stayed home for ten years to raise her three children.
In 1964 she returned to Newcomb Central School to continue a strong home economics program while completing her Masters Degree in 1981 at SUNY Plattsburgh in home economics education. Her students developed a strong human development background including family life, child development and parenting. She continually attended conferences to keep updated in her field. Under her direction, Newcomb home economic students were active in FHA-Hero and put on a senior citizen banquet each year. Aside from teaching, Mary was also class advisor and cheerleading advisor. During her tenure, countless students benefited from Mary's constant guidance and direction that made a difference in their lives.
Outside of school, Mary was also very active. She was treasurer of the Newcomb United Methodist Church; Waterfront Safety Director for the Summer Newcomb Youth Program; a salesperson at Bell Hagar Fashion and Antiques; the owner-operator of "The Garage", a consignment business; a mutuel clerk at the Saratoga Race Track; and, an usher at Saratoga Performing Arts Center. At the professional level, Mary served on the board for the Cooperative Extension of Essex County as well as serving on the Eastern District American Home Economics Association as the education chairperson.
In 1991, Mary retired from teaching at Newcomb Central School, having been named Capital District North Teacher of the Year by the New York State Home Economics Teachers Association. In her retirement years she traveled the world - including trips to Budapest, Turkey, Prague, Italy, Germany and France. A 5th generation Adirondacker, she was an avid hiker, downhill and cross-country skier, as well as enjoying antiquing, reading and quilting. She enjoyed researching family history including tracing her lineage back to the small town of Hardegsen, Germany. She was loved and respected by many for her caring and compassionate nature and her strong sense of integrity and dignity.
Besides her father, Mary is also pre-deceased by her sister, Elizabeth M.S. Pitts and more recently, her former husband, Harland H. Stubing. She leaves behind her 102 year old mother, Nathalie Menshausen; three children, Lisa A. Stubing of Syracuse, Steven M. Stubing of Glens Falls, and Sand J. Stubing and his wife, Janet and 2 grandchildren, Andrew and Cole of Greenfield. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, William Pitts of Greensboro, NC; two nephews, Mark and Scott Smith as well as an abundance of loving cousins and extended family members.
The Stubing family would also like to acknowledge all of the compassionate caregivers over the last 3 years from the staff at The Home of the Good Shepherd (Church St, Saratoga Springs) to the staff at Emeritus At the Landing (Queensbury) and finally, to the staff on 2 Springs of the Wesley Health Care Center (Saratoga Springs).
