Obituary of Shirley B. Sherman

Warrensburg: Shirley B. Sherman, 76, of Hudson Street, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014 at Glens Falls Hospital following a courageous battle with COPD. Born September 22, 1937, in Queensbury, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Helene (Porter) Bell. She was a 1955 graduate of Lake George Central School. In 1956, she earned a secretarial degree from Mildred Ellie in Albany. Shirley began her working career as a bank teller in Glens Falls. She married Francis "Red" J. Sherman on March 20, 1965 at the West Glens Falls Community Church. The couple resided in Warrensburg where they started their family. Shirley worked for McPhillip’s Insurance, as well as the Adirondack Journal. She was a longtime board member and secretary with the Warrensburg Cemetery Association and an active member of the Warrensburg First United Methodist Church; where she filled many positions, including treasurer, for several years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, as well as reading, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. Besides her parents and her beloved husband of 47 years, she is predeceased by a sister, Barbara Jean Bell. She is survived by her children; Carol Palmateer and her husband, Craig, of Hadley, Joseph Sherman of Smyrna, GA, and Faith McGinnis and her husband, Paul, of Orange, MA; two grandchildren, Ian and Seth Palmateer; her siblings, Roberta Reichenbach and her husband, David, of Queensbury, Helen Wood and her husband, F. Harvey, of South Glens Falls, and Catherine Pickett and her husband, Paul, of Queensbury; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. At Shirley's request there will be no callling hours scheduled. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be conducted, 10 am, Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the Warrensburg First United Methodist Church, 3890 Main St., Warrensburg, with Rev. Stephen Andrews, Pastor officiating. Spring Interment will take place in Warrensburg Cemetery. Shirley’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to her First United Methodist Church family, her friends and caregivers, and her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ who helped Shirley throughout her struggle with COPD.
