Obituary of Richard A. Ovitt

Warrensburg: Richard A. “Dick” Ovitt, 84, of Harrington Hill Road, passed away peacefully, Sunday, February 24, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born July 3, 1934 in Diamond Point, he was the son of the late Forest and Bertha (Beswick) Ovitt. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Warrensburg Central School. He married Barbara Monroe on October 19, 1956 at the Warrensburg First Baptist Church. Dick proudly served his country in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1959. He worked as a millwright for Warrensburg Board and Paper for 24 years and James River Paper Company for 20 years until his retirement. Besides spending time with his family, Dick enjoyed hunting with his brother, Wayne, fishing, listening to old country music, horses, and his beloved Boston Terriers. He was an honest and genuine man, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, but also very quick witted with his unique collection of one-liners. Dick was the definition of crafty and could easily fix anything thrown his way. He was an excellent carpenter, experienced welder, electrician and plumber. He had an incredible work ethic and never sat idle, he was always on the go. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by siblings, Eileen Annis and Bill Ovitt. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Barbara Ovitt of Warrensburg; his children, Cheryl Chase and her husband, John of Thurman, Diane Cutler and her husband, Bill of Gansevoort, Lisa West and her husband, Dan of Warrensburg; grandchildren, Brittany Mason of Warrensburg, Kayleigh Bluman of Schaghticoke, and Elizabeth Cutler of Hudson Falls; great-grandchildren, Jack and Luke Bluman; siblings, Dorothy Maxam of Thurman, Alice Hall of Stony Creek, and Hollis Ovitt of Diamond Point; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and his four legged friend, Bodie. At Dick’s request, there are no calling hours or funeral services scheduled. His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. John Stoutenburg and his staff at the C. R.
