Obituary of Neil W. Campbell

THURMAN - Neil Campbell, 83, of Combs Rd., passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack at his home on Monday, January 9, 2006. Born on July 22, 1922, in New York City, he was the son of the late James and Helen (Fox) Campbell. Neil served in United States Marine Corps as a corporal during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was employed by International Paper Company in Corinth for 32 years, having retired in 1984. Neil was a very active in his community and was a member of the Town Historical Society and delivered Meals on Wheels in Thurman. During his life he held the positions of Town Assessor, Town Councilman, and served on the Grievance Committee. He was the recipient of the New York State Legislative Achievement Award for his senior citizen volunteer work. Neil was known for his baking skills and enjoyed making bread and rolls for friends, family and organizations in the area. He had developed a keen interest in genealogy and the Internet and was a staunch Democrat to the end. Neil will be remembered as a man who gave far more than he ever hoped to receive. He was constantly doing and making himself of service to others. He was a model in how to live life and to find joy in unselfish moments. He will be missed by his family and friends, as well as by those people he helped daily in small ways. He made everyone who knew him come away feeling good about the things life had to give. Besides his parents, his brother John Campbell died at the Battle of Iowa Jima Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Marjorie (King); his sister, Grace Parker of Cicero; his children, Neilia Campbell and her husband Lee Grefalda of Slingerlands, John Campbell and Nicole of Warrensburg, and Connie Campbell, and her husband Bill Dickinson of West Sand Lake. He is also survived by his grandsons Travis and Colin Campbell of Warrensburg as well as four nieces and two nephews and his beloved dog Nanette II. Friends may call on Neil’s family from 1-3 and 6-8 pm Thursday at the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. A service of remembrance will follow the visitation at 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home. Spring burial will take place at Reynolds Cemetery, Thurman.
