Obituary of Clifton J. Davis
Please share a memory of Clifton to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lake George:
Clifton J. Davis, 95, of Truesdale Hill Road, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord on Wednesday evening, August 2nd, 2017. Cliff was born July 7, 1922 in North Caldwell to the late Satie and Robert Davis and resided in the North Caldwell area for his entire 95 years.
Cliff married Alice Walker on September 29, 1956. They enjoyed almost 54 years before her passing on March 24, 2010.
Cliff attended school in North Caldwell and in Warrensburg. He often shared memories of growing up during the depression and remarked that he never knew they were poor until someone told him. Cliff was always a hard worker and held many jobs as a young man, picking up work wherever he could find it. In no particular order, he was a stone mason, a pulp truck owner and an oil truck driver. He worked in the lumber mills and the paper mills and for the Department of Environmental Conservation. He spent the last 28 years of his career working for the New York State Department of Transportation, retiring in 1978 as a crane and shovel operator.
Anyone who knew Cliff, knew he was a talented musician. His sister Abbie bought him his first guitar when he was just a boy and he was never without one again. He played the local dance halls as a young man, he often played in church and he was a long time member of the Adirondack Fiddlers (yes, he could fiddle too....and he could play banjo, mandolin, steel guitar, and the list goes on). He even wrote his own original music and had two songs published. Until after his 90th birthday, he and his band, the Kitchen Pickers, would still play at the local nursing homes to entertain the residents.
After his retirement from the state, he and Alice enjoyed many winters in Florida. That came to an end however, when they decided it was too far from their family. He and Alice happily returned to the frozen winters to be closer to their grandchildren and they cherished every moment.
Cliff was never idle. He enjoyed puttering on the farm and could always find a project to keep himself (or you) busy. He especially enjoyed helping anyone in need of a hand up and assisted in the building of several churches in this area and in Florida. Nothing pleased him more though, than helping his sons with a project. Whether it was laying a cement block wall or fixing the roof, there was nothing he didn't know how to do. We will all miss his guidance and his advice. Cliff and Alice attended many churches throughout the area. Cliff thought that the message was the important part of religion and enjoyed attending various churches and hearing different viewpoints. Cliff was predeceased by Alice and by his parents, as well as his siblings, Hattie Larrow, Elda (Dode) Monroe and Robert Davis.
Cliff is survived by his sons and their wives, Jim Davis (Sherri), Tom Davis (Lynn), Bill Davis (Sue) and Dan Davis (Wendy). He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Todd, Kori, Baron (Angel), Tammy, Melissa (Bill), Ben (Chelsea), Josh (Jan) and Noah. He was blessed as well by his great-grandchildren, Amber & Zack Davis, Finn, Megan & Emily Deuel and Joel & Troy Davis. His sister, Abbie Hastings also survives him. Cliff also held a special place in his heart for his extended family including Marion Davis Luppy and his many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank all those who made Dad's journey so special. Your kindness is appreciated.
