Obituary of Fred W. Hitchcock

Please share a memory of Fred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bakers Mills: Fred Wilbur Hitchcock, 68, of Edwards Hill Road died unexpectedly Tuesday, November 7, 2017 while hunting with his good friends and family. Born June 6, 1949 in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Bertha (Dalaba) Hitchcock. Following his graduation from Johnsburg Central School in 1970, he enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country overseas in Vietnam until his honorable discharge in 1974. After his years of service in the Navy Fred spent time working for Finch Pruyn in their Woodlands Division, as a heavy equipment operator, and later at their Pruyn Island location. Fred decided in 1988 to serve the town he so loved and was elected as the Town of Johnsburg Highway Superintendent for 18 consecutive years. During his time in this position his most notable accomplishment was rebuilding the town highway garage and equipment following a fire which had destroyed everything. Fred retired from the Town of Johnsburg in 2006. It was then that he was able to spend all his time doing what he loved the most; being a true outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish, hike, four wheel, and spend time with his dog, family, and friends. His survivors include two daughters, Heather Johnston and her husband Chris of Jupiter, FL and Brook Carder and her husband Chris of Culpeper, VA; 4 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; two sisters, Penny Dunkley and her family of Chestertown and Judy Hitchcock and her family of Pottersville; two brothers Lewis Hitchcock and his family and Daniel Hitchcock and his family, both of Bakers Mills. Friends may call on Fred’s family from 4 to 6 pm, Saturday, November 11, 2017 at the Alexander Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg. A brief memorial service will follow visitation at 6 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests the memorial donations be made to the Bakers Mills Sodom Volunteer Fire Company, where he was a lifelong member at PO Box 1, Bakers Mills, NY 12811 in his memory.
