Please share a memory of Janet to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

LAKE GEORGE:  Nikki M. Huus passed away on Wednesday, May 13th, 2026, released from her long suffering and welcomed home by our Lord. She leaves behind broken hearts and great sorrow for those who loved her and cherished the spirit she brought to her life. She was a remarkable woman who touched many and left an indelible imprint on the world.

Born in Staten Island, New York in 1950, Nikki had a sense of adventure and a desire to create and shape meaning from an early age. Those who have known her the longest know of her penchant for climbing out of her crib so she could render aid and friendship to “the baby crying in Bayonne, the city across the water, visible from her bedroom. A native and proud Staten Islander, she grew up in Castleton Corners. Her lifelong friend and neighbor Mimi recalls how they “grew up being continually outdoors, constructing snow forts, trick or treating, riding bikes, swimming, playing with Barbie dolls, making scrap books, trying and failing at worm farming, resulting in a life-long friendship of 73 years.” Nikki and Mimi would even attend New York Rangers games at the original Madison Square Garden. Raised in the Huus family, where her FDNY grandfather played semi pro football, she grew up as a “we bleed blue” fan and regular at NY Football Giants games, as well as NY Yankees games, for over sixty-five years. There are few who could match her knowledge of play and history in both sports. Nikki was also an accomplished horsewoman from the early age of five, who rode English and even, during one summer, rode with the flags at Painted Pony rodeo. In her teens, she was an ardent fan of the folk music scene in New York City’s East Village and could be found enjoying Dave Van Ronk, Joan Baez, Dylan and others at Cafe Wha and The Bitter End. Nikki also took up guitar and, with her lovely, soft soprano, could even be seen playing guitar and singing folk songs along with her brother Will during Lake George summers.

Nikki began her education at Notre Dame Academy in Staten Island, before moving over to The Staten Island Academy, completing her high school years at Richmondtown Prep. She began her college career at Mount Ida College, in Boston, and then graduated with her Bachelor’s in Art from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. She decided to pursue the teaching of Art and attended Norwich University’s Masters in Arts program. She then taught art at Lake George elementary.

Nikki raised two vital, bright twin sons, Erik and Lars, who are the undisputed joy of her life. Upon marrying John, in 2005, she welcomed his son, Kelton, into her family and rooting on the home teams only became louder and more spirited on game day. Later in life, she branched out, utilizing her extensive knowledge of cooking and experience in restaurants to write a food and recipe column called “Gourmet by the Bay,” for “The Lake George Mirror.” She was a committed and active congregant of The Church of the Holy Cross in Warrenburg, NY. As was her character, she participated in the life of the church. Most notably she served with her husband, John, on the search committee for a new rector in 2011, and spent many years organizing and promoting Lenten Friday Night Soup Suppers that were held along with the Stations of the Cross.

In 2005 Nikki married John Rose and they began a life full of adventure and travel and wonderful family events; all such events usually coordinated with Nikki planning and cooking seasonal gourmet meals that were truly celebratory. Their travels included everything from “Moosing” in Vermont and New Hampshire, ski trips and summer repast in Quebec, as well as Bar Harbor, all the way down to Chincoteague Maryland, where she enjoyed catching more fish than John’s brother, Wesley Rose.

Nikki is predeceased by her father, William, her mother, Doroty, and her brother Will.

She is survived by her husband, John, his son Kelton, her twin sons Erik and Lars, as well as two grandsons, Torin and Breckin, and two granddaughters, Scarlet and Ella.

We are all suffering from our loss of this vibrant and amazing woman and so appreciate the love and support of our families and friends as we embark on our journey of healing.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Glens Falls Hospital, as well as doctors, nurses and staff at Albany Medical Center for their commitment and dedication to Nikki’s medical needs. They were professional, and many became family.
