Obituary of Gregory Alan Engel
GLENS FALLS: Gregory Alan Engel, “64 years young,” passed away tragically on April 12, 2026, while on vacation in the Dominican Republic.
Greg was born on July 1, 1961, in Albany, NY, to the late Robert and Virginia (O’Brien) Engel. He graduated from Columbia High School in East Greenbush, NY in 1979, and went on to further his education at SUNY Oneonta pursuing a bachelor’s degree in literature and philosophy, where he was also a star pitcher for the Oneonta Dragon's baseball team.
At the time of his graduation, opportunities in the literature field were limited, so Greg began his career with Owens Corning in Cortland, NY. After several years in manufacturing, he attended Hudson Valley Community College where he earned associates in arts and applied science in the fields of electronics and computer programming. He moved to Canada in 1999 and transitioned into the field of software security, working in cybersecurity. After returning to the US, he worked as a private contract software developer for many companies, both local and internationally. He later joined General Electric, where he helped develop software used to reroute power during outages, and finished his career maintaining and redeveloping software for BAE Systems and Department of Homeland Security. In recent months, Greg made the decision to retire, and he and his wife were celebrating this new chapter with a vacation.
In 2001, Greg met the love of his life, Abby Reynolds-Colvin, on a blind date. That meeting led to a lasting partnership, and they were married on March 27, 2003, celebrating 23 years together this year.
Greg was a talented musician who played guitar, banjo, mandolin, and drums. He even built a recording studio in his home and was a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association. In addition to music, Greg had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, and riding his two motorcycles.
Baseball remained a lifelong passion. A devoted Boston Red Sox fan, Greg played throughout grade school, high school and college, and later in the Albany Twilight League. In 1996, he was honored with the Cy Young Pitching Award by the C.D.M.S.B.L. Hudson Division League.
Besides his parents, Robert and Virginia Engel, Greg is predeceased by a son Maxwell Engel and his mother-in-law Joan Reynolds.
Left to cherish Greg’s memory are his wife Abby Engel of Glens Falls; sons Conner Joseph and Brody Fenway Engel of Glens Falls, step son Christopher Colvin of South Glens Falls; step daughter Mahra (Bryan) Davidson of Seattle, Washington; grandchildren Maisie and Henry Davidson of Seattle, Washington; brother Steve (Terri) Engel of East Greenbush, NY; father-in-law Leo Reynolds of Queensbury; brother-in-law Jay (Melissa) Reynolds of New Jersey; many extended family members and Greg’s beloved dog Pedey who was his buddy.
