Obituary of George H. Allen
BAKERS MILLS: George H. Allen, 95, of Barney Hill Road in Bakers Mills, NY, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his children. He was the last surviving member of his family of nine siblings, and his passing is a great loss to all who loved him.
George was born on November 9, 1930, in Johnsburg, the son of the late George F. and Cora (Millington) Allen. A lifelong resident of the area, he was married to his beloved wife, Harriet (Ross) Allen, for 71 years until her passing in 2020.
George worked for 21 years at National Lead and later for 22 years at Barton Mines, before retiring from full-time employment. Following retirement, his favorite “jobs” became running errands, babysitting, and simply being Dad. He cherished his family, loved sharing stories, and welcomed the laughter that always followed. Patient, kind, understanding, and occasionally stubborn, George leaves his children with countless memories—many of them filled with laughter, which they continue to share as they reminisce.
Two of George’s favorite sayings were, “I wish I was rich instead of good-looking,” and “I wouldn’t give a nickel for another one, but I wouldn’t take a million for any of you.”
Besides his parents and wife, George is predeceased by a daughter, Priscilla Ann; siblings Mary (Allen) Robbins, Francis, Arnold, Harold, Lester, Gerald, Keith and Lee; as well as grandchildren, Cora Beth and Christopher Hitchcock.
George is survived by his children Stella Allen of Johnsburg, Gretchen Kirby and her husband Sargeant of Johnsburg, Louie Depape and husband Ed of Williamson, NY, Donna Sherrick of Wisconsin, Daniel Allen and his wife Jonnie of Georgia, Penny Stout and husband Dave of Johnsburg, Jeff Allen of New Mexico, Ike Allen and wife Connie of Johnsburg and Sally Molina of Pennsylvania; uncle Jim Ross; aunt Laura Ross and Daisy Allen; grandchildren Jake, Stephen, Mike, Julie, Erin, Nichole, Christopher, Andrew, Heidi, Maya, Kennie, Bill, Marc, Amanda, Sarah, Brittany, Courtney, Jessica, Jasmine and Jalissa; 38 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
George’s family would like to thank Stephanie Wood for the loving care she provided and for being like a daughter to George. They also offer their heartfelt thanks to High Peaks Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and support.
