Obituary of Raymond J. Smith
GLENS FALLS: Raymond J. Smith, 87, of Glens Falls, NY, passed away peacefully at his residence on October 5, 2025.
Ray was born on August 13, 1938, in South Glens Falls, NY, to the late Henry Smith and Myra (Harrington) Bishop. He graduated from South Glens Falls High School in 1958 and entered the workforce shortly thereafter. Over the years, Ray worked for several local companies, including Finch & Pruyn, Benches Factory in Glens Falls, Swift Meat Packing Company, and Armour Meat Company, as both a plant worker and truck driver. He later joined Glens Falls Produce, where he drove truck and worked as a butcher until his retirement in 2015.
During his career, Ray proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Seabee, receiving an honorable discharge in 1981.
Ray was a talented woodworker who enjoyed carpentry and making wood crafts. He was actively involved with his church communities at Potter’s Grove and Durkeetown Baptist Church. He was also a proud member of the Adirondack Car Club and loved attending car shows with his family.
In addition to his parents, Ray was predeceased by his siblings, Robert Smith, Donna Baker, and Nelson Smith; his granddaughter, Danielle Smith; and his former wife, Faith Smith.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Laura Smith, Raymond (Sandy) Smith, Dan Smith, and Ed Smith; his longtime companion, Janice Powell; grandchildren, Sandra Smith, Dawn (Greg) Novotny, John (Shontel) Smith, Austin Ingoldsby, Nancyann (Ryan) LaClair, and Jennie Smith; great-grandchildren, Ronald Winney, Oaklind Smith, Bennett Smith, Rowan Smith, and Noah Ingoldsby; sisters, Betty Prescott, Rachael [last name], and Alice Copeland; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends at Stitchman Towers.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Durkeetown Baptist Church, 2 Durkeetown Road, Fort Edward, NY. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m., with Pastor Ken Prater officiating.
Burial with be conducted at 11 am, Monday, October 20, 2025 at the West Glens Falls Cemetery.
