Obituary of Steven Hannigan

Please share a memory of Steven to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

BOLTON:  Steven "Wild Man" Hannigan, affectionately known to many as "Big Daddy," and "Pops," passed away on April 18, 2025, in Bolton, NY, at the age of 65.

Born on December 14, 1959, in Cornwall, New York to the late Charles Hannigan Sr. and Gladys (Ruscelli) Hannigan.  Steven grew up in Fort Montgomery before making his way north in 2004 to the Adirondacks—a place he cherished and proudly called home.

He attended James I. O’Neill High School, where he was a standout football player and a spirited jokester. Driving demolition derby cars and NASCAR was also a passion. With a career rooted in landscaping and small motor mechanics, Steven was known for his hands-on skills, work ethic, and a willingness to teach where he could in any aspect of life, which made him admirable amongst those willing to learn. He also never hesitated to open his door to anyone in need, treating his friends like family.

Stevens love for the outdoors defined much of his life. He had a passion for deer hunting and fishing across the lakes surrounding his Adirondack home. He loved boating, riding four-wheelers, camping, having bonfires, playing darts or tossing horseshoes. Steven thrived in gatherings with laughter and antics, with music blasting from speakers, cold beers in hand with good company.

Known his favorite sayings like “Here we go!”, “Carry on,” and “See ya when I see ya” became part of his signature charm. He had a knack for pulling pranks and lighting up any room—or campsite—with his presence. At first glance he may have looked like a hippie, but if you asked him, he would have told you he was just a well-groomed mountain man!

He was preceded in death by his parents Charles Hannigan Sr. and Gladys (Ruscelli) Hannigan; brother Charles "Butch" Jr. and sister Terry Hannigan-Anderson; sister-in-law Patricia; nephew Charlie Hannigan; as well as two treasured canine companions, Teko and Sophia.

He is lovingly remembered by his children; son Steve Hannigan (Erica), daughter Heather Miller, granddaughter Charlii Hannigan; his sister Debra Hannigan-Petrosky (Raymond); brother Kelly "Pug" Hannigan (Laurie); nieces and nephews Trisha Hannigan-Vanzetta (Joe), Melissa Anderson, Sean "Homer" Anderson, Kiersten Zgrodek (John), Mathew Thomas (Katy), Amanda Thomas, and Conner Hannigan.

Steven will be deeply missed by his girlfriend Debbie Johnson-Walsh of the past decade. He also shared chapters of life with ex-wives Cathy Rush Muller and Cheryl Miller Hannigan who have remained dear friends to him and will continue to carry his memories.

Steven’s legacy lives on through his family's memories and his abundance of friends who will never forget him. He was truly one of a kind—a man with a wild soul who lived life loud and always considered himself blessed.

Per Steven’s wishes, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
