Jane was a very special lady. Unable to attend this morning's Mass due to COVID-19 travel precautions, I would like to offer my condolences to the family's loss. I first met Jane in the 1980's when she served on Bolton's Planning Board and Zoning Revision Committee and I was Director of RPI's Darrin Fresh Water Institute. Our initial interactions were always professional as we worked with the Town on the building of a year-round research and community service laboratory. From those years we became friends providing opportunities to visit either at her home or when she and Zandy would attend my summer lecture series at the Institute. Enjoyable times I will remember always. What a remarkable lady with a life well-lived!

I remember Mrs. Gabriels from the time I was 6 or 7 years old and became friends with Janie. I LOVED going to the Gabriels' house in Altamont. I remember riding the horses, trying to fish in the pond, boiling maple tree sap in the maple sugar house and having an Easter egg hunt. We hunted for some of those eggs for weeks after Easter!
Mrs. Gabriels was simply amazing, talented (I remember her doing embroidery) and seemingly knew everything. I am so sorry to have not seen her in recent years. To Jane, Dave, Chris and the rest of the family, my sincerest condolences for your loss and know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Gabriels taught me how to swim at the old Albany Country Club, now the campus of S.U.N.Y.A. My family were members for a few years and my father was a colleague of Dr. Gabriels. My father asked Jane if she could teach me to swim. My father swam, but was not really comfortable in the water, so he asked for assistance. Jane was more than happy to assist. I was five or six at the time. All it took was one lesson and I took to swimming like a duck to water. The lesson was very quick. She threw me in the pool. I swam and have LOVED the water ever since. End of story. My best to the entire family.

I was fortunate to know both Jane's when we moved to Voorheesville. Jane was my best friend in elementary school. I slept over many times and just adored her Mom. She told the best stories and encouraged us to challenge ourselves, try new things and to believe in ourselves. I am so grateful to have known her and my heart goes out to the 6 n 1 kids to have lost such a treasure of a mom.

I am so sorry to learn of Jane's passing. I remember her so well from when she used to bring her daughter Jane to piano lessons with me in Altamont. And especially at Christmastide, when she always gifted me with her lovely tea breads, liberally doused with good whiskey. I'm sorry to have lost track of her, we could have been fine friends. May her soul truly rest in peace, and God's love surround all of you.

Jane Gabriels was a great lady who knew how to have fun. As a newcomer to Bolton in the early 1990’s, I soon heard her name in connection with everything of public significance. When I got to know her, I learned why. Whether library or healthcare or politics, where there was need, Jane Gabriels was an important influence. She was an inspiration to me as a citizen of Bolton Landing, and I was proud to be included in luncheons with her dear friends Sally Defty and Theta Curri. She was always smiling, always aware of what was going on, always ready to help or to lead, on a scale large or small. The acoustic is annoyingly lively at the new community center? Jane hand made a fiber wall hanging to dampen reverberation. It was staggeringly intricate, vibrantly beautiful, and seemingly larger that her gem of a retirement home. How did she do it? She just did. She raised an extraordinary brood of six children who continue her efforts to improve the world for the less fortunate, and to protect the lake she loved so much. My heart aches for your immense loss. I will miss her, and I treasure the honor of having known her. Rest In Peace, Jane. You lived life well and long, with grace and zest and love.
