Obituary of Elizabeth B. Monroe

North Creek: Elizabeth “Betty” (Harvey) Monroe, 90, of Main St, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born August 21,1922 on the family farm in North River, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Maggie (Lincoln) Harvey. Betty was employed by Johnsburg Central School as a cafeteria worker and a waitress at the Garnet Hill Lodge in North River for the late Jim and Nancy Hagan. Betty was a member of the Adirondack Tri County Nursing Home Auxiliary, Gore Mountain Senior Citizens, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed walking (when she was able), bingo, casinos, jig-saw puzzles, gardening, and had a great love of flowers. She married Elwin L. “Que-Ball” Monroe, Jr. on May 26, 1946. The couple spent 41 years together before his untimely passing on May 6, 1987. In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Betty was predeceased by a son, Joseph Monroe; brother, James Harvey; and sisters, Jesse Harvey, Dorothy Shaw, Golda Stone, Marge Dunkley, Emma Waldron, and Alberta Houston. She is survived by two sons, James Monroe and his wife, Mary of Ballston Spa, and John Monroe and his wife, Edythe of North River; her daughter, Judith Monroe of North River, who was her caregiver for many years; daughter-in-law, Marion Monroe; sister-in-laws, Veronica Harvey, Peirrette Monroe; brother-in-law, Harry Monroe and his wife, Nancy. She also leaves behind six grandchildren, Jennifer Sankiewwycz, Jason Monroe and his wife, Morgan, Heather Monroe-Gibson and her husband, David, Colleen Monroe, Zachary Monroe and his wife, Clarissa, and Quentin Monroe and his wife, Heather; great-grandchildren, James Chasue, Issiac, and Mikayla Gibson, Benjamin Sankiewycz, Elizabeth, Adam, Lucas, and Samantha Monroe, and Alexis Allen; her dear friends, Ollie Monthony, Hattie and Jim Robbins; and several nieces and nephews that affectionately referred to her as Aunt “Bid”. At Betty’s request there will be no calling hours scheduled. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, June 19th in North River Cemetery, with Pastor Ronald Allen officiating. Following the interment, family and friends are encouraged to gather at the North River Fire House for a pot luck celebration. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Elizabeth’s memory to the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing Home Auxiliary or the Johnsburg Emergency Squad.
