Obituary of Mildred L. Prouty

Mildred Morehouse Prouty, 97, passed away peacefully, Saturday, December 22, 2012 at the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Creek following many years of declining health.
She was born in the family homestead on Oven Mountain Road in Johnsburg on April 26, 1915, the daughter of the late Leon Jay and Jessie May (Coulter) Morehouse. After starting school in the district school on Goodman Road in Johnsburg she graduated from North Creek High School in 1931. She then graduated from Adirondack Business School in Glens Falls.
She married Mark Prouty on September 29, 1934 and within a few years they had built a home on Oven Mountain Road next door to her parents. Mildred worked as a bookkeeper at the former Johnsburg Garage for a few years and left to raise her family.
After her children were in school she worked for several years in the office at Hewitt’s Garage in North Creek.
After her father’s death in 1953 Mildred and Mark purchased Orchard Hill Farm which her father had operated and later added a GLF (today’s Agway) feed and farm supplies business which they ran for many years. In 1958 they purchased the Johnsburg Public Market and operated that along with the Agway dealership. In 1963 they built a new home next to the store in Johnsburg and it has been Mildred‘s home for 49 years.
Among her many interests in life were playing bridge and Bingo, baking, traveling, knitting, crocheting and in recent years enjoying her grandchildren and great grandchildren as they came along. She also enjoyed trips to casinos at Saratoga and Turning Stone.
Mildred was a member of the Johnsburg Methodist Church since 1977 and an active member of the United Methodist Women, working for bazaars and food sales and her baked beans were in great demand at those food sales.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband Mark in 1981 and her sister Jean Reed in 2012 as well as one great grandson, Maxwell Engel.
Survivors are her children, Joan (Leo) Reynolds, Bruce (Bette) Prouty and Leon (Susan) Prouty as well as grandchildren Jay (Melissa) Reynolds, Abby (Greg) Engel, Bruce (Kate) Prouty II, Todd (Sally) Prouty, Chester (Nicole) Prouty, Deborah Prouty, and Jennifer (Avtar) Natt. She is also survived by great grandchildren Mahra & Christopher Colvin, Conner and Brody Engel, Alyssa, Brooke and Sophia Prouty and Gavin & Grace Prouty., Chester and Nathan Prouty, Arundeep, Suneet and Daya Natt as well as two sisters in law and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call on Mildred’s family from 5-8 pm Wednesday, December 26 at the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home, 3809 Main St., Warrensburg.
A funeral service to celebrate her life will be conducted 11 am Thursday at the Johnsburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Winkelman, Pastor officiating.
Burial will be conducted in Bates Cemetery, Johnsburg.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Johnsburg Methodist Church, P O Box 98, Johnsburg, NY 12843.
