Brant Lake: Norman G. Duell, 92, of State Route 8, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with cancer. Born June 2, 1918 in Horicon, he was the son of the late Orlin and Georgia (Combs) Duell. Following his graduation from Horicon School, Norman enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served 39 months in the European Theater until his honorable discharge in 1945. He married his childhood sweetheart, Helen Monroe on November 20, 1945 in Ripley and the couple enjoyed 58 wonderful years together, hunting, fishing, gardening, and building their home until her passing on November 8, 2003. Norman was a member of the Chestertown Post 5513 VFW. He worked for the NYS Department of Transportation as a general foreman for over 25 years until his retirement in 1980, when he and his wife discovered their love for traveling together. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandson’s and great-grandson, Matthew. Besides his parents and beloved wife, he is predeceased by his two brothers, Orvill and Lee Duell. He is survived by his two sons: Neil Duell and his wife, Susan of Chestertown; Norman Duell and his wife, Elizabeth Ann of Tribes Hill; six grandchildren: Matthew Harpp, Kyle Moffitt, and Ethan Moffitt of Chestertown; Nicole Duell, Norman Duell, and Kristen Duell, all of Tribes Hill; his great-grandson, Matthew Harpp of Chestertown; extended family members: Alfred, Eldrid, and Nancy Harpp; his special friend, Harry Herbert; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. At Norman’s request, there are no calling hours scheduled. A graveside service with Military Honors will be conducted 11 am, Thursday, at the Brant Lake Cemetery, Route 8, Brant Lake with Rev. Flossie Gage Bates, High Peaks Hospice Chaplain officiating. Norman’s family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at High Peaks Hospice, his nurse, JoAnn, and his social worker, Kim and Rev.
